KC MAN INDICTED FOR FILING FALSE TAX RETURNS
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Matt J. Whitworth, Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that a Kansas City, Mo., man was indicted by a federal grand jury today for filing false tax returns.
William E. Schroff, 71, of Kansas City, was charged in a three-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Kansas City. During the time of the alleged offenses, Schroff owned and operated several businesses, including an industrial sandblasting and painting company known as ANS Company.
Today’s indictment alleges that Schroff filed a Form 1040 with the Internal Revenue Service on May 28, 2003, in which he reported taxable income of $1,075 for the calendar year 2001. In reality, the indictment says, Schroff’s taxable income that year was approximately $131,568.
On April 15, 2003, Schroff allegedly filed a Form 1040 with the Internal Revenue Service in which he reported a taxable loss of $43,396 for the calendar year 2002. In reality, the indictment says, Schroff’s taxable income that year was approximately $328,225.
The indictment also alleges that Schroff filed a Form 1040 with the Internal Revenue Service on April 15, 2004, in which he reported a taxable loss of $41,694 for the calendar year 2003. In reality, the indictment says, Schroff’s taxable income that year was approximately $108,590.
Whitworth cautioned that the charges contained in this indictment are simply accusations, and not evidence of guilt. Evidence supporting the charges must be presented to a federal trial jury, whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney William L. Meiners. It was investigated by IRS-Criminal Investigation.
