Two mexican nationals plead guilty to trafficking cocaine in taos
This morning, Jose Sergio Alcaya-Villalobos, 21, and Luis Cordova Ponce, 20, both Mexican nationals, entered guilty pleas to federal narcotics trafficking offenses before United States Magistrate Judge Lorenzo F. Garcia. Each defendant pleaded guilty to a two-count information charging him with (1) conspiracy to distribute cocaine, and (2) possession of cocaine with intent to distribute under plea agreements with the United States Attorney's Office. Alcaya-Villalobos and Ponce were arrested on state charges on January 26, 2010 and were transferred to federal custody in March 2010 after they were indicted on federal charges. Both men remain in custody pending sentencing hearings, which have yet to be scheduled. Each defendant faces up to twenty years imprisonment and up to three years supervised release.
In their respective plea agreements, Alcaya-Villalobos and Ponce each admitted that, on January 26, 2010, they agreed with each other to sell cocaine out of their mutual residence in Taos County. Each also admitted that, on that day, they permitted uniformed officers of the New Mexico State Police to enter their residence and conduct a search. During the search, the officers seized approximately 179 grams of cocaine, proceeds from the defendant's drug trafficking activities, and drug paraphernalia, including scales, packaging materials and materials for diluting cocaine.
United States Attorney Kenneth J. Gonzales said that the case was investigated by the New Mexico State Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration, and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Samuel A. Hurtado.
