Mexican man arrested in hidalgo county with undocumented alien hidden in trunk of car pleads guilty

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 8, 2011

LAS CRUCES – United States Attorney Kenneth J. Gonzales announced that earlier today, Hernan Canseco-Vasquez, 30, of Oaxaca, Mexico, pled guilty to a four-count indictment charging him with conspiracy, transporting illegal aliens and reentry of a deported alien. Canseco-Vasquez, who was arrested on November 2, 2010, on the charges, remains in federal custody pending sentencing.

According to the criminal complaint, a New Mexico Motor Traffic Division officer stopped a car driven by Canseco-Vasquez for speeding on Highway 80 near mile marker 28 in Hidalgo County, New Mexico. When the car stopped, Canseco-Vasquez and three others fled. The officer discovered a fifth person locked in the trunk of the car. After the officer called the United States Border Patrol for assistance, agents found Canseco-Vasquez and the others who fled hiding in brush approximately two miles from where the car had stopped. All of the individuals in the car were Mexican citizens with no legal documentation permitting them to enter the United States. The complaint alleged that Canseco-Vasquez had agreed to drive the group to Phoenix, Arizona, and that Canseco-Vasquez previously had been deported from the United States on February 3, 2010. Canseco-Vasquez faces up to 10 years of imprisonment on the transporting charges and up to 20 years of imprisonment on the reentry charge.

The case was investigated by the United States Border Patrol and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jessica Cárdenas Jarvis.
