Dexter man sentenced for federal firearm offense

SANTA FE – United States Attorney Kenneth J. Gonzales announced that earlier today in Santa Fe, Shane L. Larson, 32, of Dexter, New Mexico, was sentenced by United States Chief District Judge Bruce D. Black to 30 months of imprisonment to be followed by a three-year term of supervised release for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

According to the criminal complaint, Larson was arrested on February 7, 2010, after a Roswell police officer found a loaded Glock .45 caliber handgun in Larson’s waistband. The officer encountered Larson in the parking lot of the Budget Inn in Roswell, New Mexico at 2:00 a.m. Larson reached for his waistband, prompting the officer to conduct a pat down search. During the search, the officer found the gun in Larson’s waistband.

Larson, who has prior felony convictions for forgery and aggravated burglary in the Fifth Judicial District Court in Chaves County, pled guilty to the federal firearm charge on May 19, 2010. Larson has been in custody since his arrest on February 7, 2010.

My office is committed to removing armed felons from our streets. I commend the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and local law enforcement for their combined efforts in Southeastern New Mexico, and throughout the state, to accomplish this worthy goal.

This case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Roswell Police Department. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Aaron O. Jordan.
