Previously Departed Mexican National Receives 36-Month Prison Sentence for Unlawful Re-Entry into United States
ALBUQUERQUE – Today in Albuquerque federal court, Juan Carlos Urbin-Ortega, 23, was sentenced to a 30-month term of imprisonment based on his conviction for re-entering the United States without authorization and after having previously been deported. Urbin- Ortega, a Mexican national from Cuidad Juarez, will be deported after completing his prison sentence.
United States Attorney Kenneth J. Gonzales said Urbin-Ortega was previously deported from Laredo, Texas to Mexico in February 2010 following his July 2008 felony conviction for “transporting non-citizens for financial gain” in the State of Texas. Urbin-Ortega was arrested in this case on July 15, 2010 when a United States Border Patrol Agent encountered him in Sunland Park, New Mexico, and learned that he was a Mexican citizen who was illegally in the United States. He has been in federal custody since that time. On October 22, 2010, Urbin-Ortega entered a guilty plea to an information charging him with re-entry of a removed alien.
Assistant United States Attorney Norman Cairns prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the United States Border Patrol, U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
