ALBUQUERQUE – United States Attorney Kenneth J. Gonzales announced that, this morning in federal court in Albuquerque, Leonard G. Marquez, 42, was sentenced to a 15-year term of imprisonment to be followed by three years of supervised release for his federal firearms conviction.

Marquez, a resident of Albuquerque, was indicted and charged as a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition on February 20, 2007.  He was arrested on October 25, 2007 and has been in federal custody since that time.

According to the indictment, on November 28, 2006, Marquez was unlawfully in possession of a firearm and ammunition in Bernalillo County.  At that time, Marquez was precluded from possessing firearms and ammunition because he previously had been convicted of three felony offenses (shoplifting over $2500.00, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and residential burglary) in the Second Judicial District Court (Bernalillo County) and two felony offenses (residential burglary and the unlawful taking of a motor vehicle) in the Thirteen Judicial District Court (Sandoval and Valencia Counties).

Proceedings in the case were delayed from April 2009 through February 2010 for competency proceedings which concluded with a finding that Marquez was competent to stand trial.  On September 8, 2010, Marquez entered a guilty plea under a plea agreement with the United States Attorney's Office.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives with assistance from the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office, and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Louis E. Valencia.
