
April 25, 2007 - United States Attorney PATRICK L. MEEHAN and Berks County District Attorney MARK BALDWIN today announced the filing of an indictment* against JOEL MICHAEL TYSON, charging him with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Under federal law, convicted felons are prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition. The indictment alleges that on February 25, 2007, TYSON possessed a 9 mm, Ruger, semi-automatic handgun with a high capacity magazine.
This indictment is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods. Project Safe Neighborhoods is a joint initiative by the United States Attorney’s Office, the Berks County District Attorney's Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Reading Police Department, the Berks County Sheriff’s Department, and other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to identify and prosecute firearms offenders in federal court, where the defendants are likely to receive a substantial sentence upon conviction. This investigation was initiated by the Reading Police Department.
Defendant TYSON faces a total possible maximum sentence of 10 years, 3 years of supervised release, a $250,000 fine, and a $100 special assessment.
