June 26, 2007 - United States Attorney Patrick L. Meehan today announced the filing of an indictment* charging Matthew Sanders with the December 30, 2006 gunpoint robbery of the K-Mart at 900 Orthodox Street in Philadelphia. Sanders is also charged with using and carrying a firearm during a crime of violence.
The defendant was arrested in February 2007. Upon conviction, he faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment; a $500,000 fine; 5 years supervised release; and a $200 special assessment. The defendant also faces a mandatory minimum term of seven years imprisonment consecutive to any other sentence imposed.

This case was investigated by the Philadelphia Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Prosecution has been assigned to Assistant United States Attorney Vineet Gauri. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a federal initiative designed to identify and prosecute firearms offenders in federal court, where the defendant is likely to receive a substantial sentence upon conviction.
