March 29, 2007 - United States Attorney Patrick L. Meehan today announced the filing of a seven-count indictment* charging Gary Edwards with distribution of cocaine and distribution of more than five grams of cocaine base (“crack”).

The indictment alleges that on September 19, 2006, on October 3, 2006, on October 26, 2006 and on January 9, 2007, Edwards distributed cocaine. The indictment further alleges that on January 9, 2007 and on February 1, 2007, Edwards distributed more than five grams of cocaine base (“crack”). The indictment further alleges that on February 2, 2007, having been convicted in a court of the United States of America of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year, the defendant possessed 100 rounds of ammunition.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a federal initiative designed to identify and prosecute firearms offenders in federal court, where the defendant is likely to receive a substantial sentence upon conviction. If convicted, defendant Edwards faces a maximum of 170 years’ imprisonment including a five year mandatory minimum term of incarceration, four years up to lifetime supervised release, a $8,250,000 fine, and a $700 special assessment.

This case was investigated by the Philadelphia Police Department, the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Bureau of Narcotics Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives and has been assigned to Assistant United States Attorney Joseph J. Khan.
