BANK ROBBERS SENTENCED

Two men who pled guilty to robbing banks were sentenced today in federal court in Dallas, announced Richard B. Roper, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas.

In one case, Michael Harrison Mathews, 36, of Dallas, was sentenced to 100 months in prison and ordered to pay $17,694 in restitution by U.S. Senior District Judge Barefoot Sanders. Mathews admitted robbing banks in Dallas, Tarrant, Travis and McLennan counties in 2005.

In the other case, Curtis Joe Smith, 35, of Duncanville, Texas, was sentenced to 45 months imprisonment by U.S. District Judge Jane J. Boyle for the September 13, 2006 robbery of Bank of America on Camp Wisdom Road in Dallas. In the course of this robbery, in discussions with the teller, Smith gave the teller his Social Security number, which she later provided to law enforcement

U.S. Attorney Roper commended the investigative work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Austin and Waco, Texas Police Departments. The cases were prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys John Kull and Keith Robinson.
