FEDERAL GRAND JURY IN AMARILLO CHARGES MAN WITH
FAILING TO REGISTER AS A SEX OFFENDER

AMARILLO, Tx. --- A federal grand jury in Amarillo has returned a one-count indictment charging Roy Oscar Olivarez, 27, formerly of Wichita, Kansas, with failing to register as a sex offender, announced U.S. Attorney Richard B. Roper of the Northern District of Texas.

The indictment states that Olivarez was required to register under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act and that he traveled in interstate commerce from Kansas to Texas, failing to register or update a registration as required. If convicted, Olivarez faces a maximum statutory sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

An indictment is an accusation by a federal grand jury and a defendant is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty.

The case is being investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Lubbock, Texas, Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy L. Drake, of the Amarillo, Texas, U.S. Attorney’s Office.
