CONVICTED FELON SENTENCED TO DALLAS – U.S. District Judge Sidney A. Fitzwater sentenced Jennifer Lee Mathis, 30, of Wichita Falls, Texas, to 120 months (10 years) imprisonment, without parole, the maximum punishment, for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, announced U.S. Attorney Richard B. Roper. “This sentence is an example of the type of punishment that awaits convicted felons who are found with firearms,” added U.S. Attorney Roper. In August, 2007, Mathis was indicted by a federal grand jury for this offense, and in September, 2007, she was convicted. The facts reflect that on June 12, 2007, state and federal law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Mathis’s home in Wichita Falls and found two handguns. Mathis, a convicted felon, admitted that she had acquired the two firearms. The case was presented for federal prosecution by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) through the Project Safe Neighborhood initiative, a federal program designed for the swift and aggressive prosecution of firearm offenses. U.S. Attorney Roper praised the efforts of ATF and the Wichita Falls Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Gary Tromblay. ### |
