LUBBOCK MAN SENTENCED TO 16 MONTHS IN FEDERAL PRISON
IN BANK THEFT CASE

LUBBOCK, Texas — Darrell Eugene Cartwright, 29, of Lubbock, was sentenced this morning by U.S. District Judge Sam R. Cummings to 16 months in federal prison for stealing approximately $36,000 from a bank, announced U.S. Attorney James T. Jacks of the Northern District of Texas. Cartwright was arrested on June 18, 2010, on a charge outlined in a related federal criminal complaint and released on a personal recognizance bond. Judge Cummings ordered that he surrender to the Bureau of Prisons on January 21, 2011.

In September 2010, Cartwright pleaded guilty to one count of bank theft. In plea papers filed, he admitted that on June 17, 2010, he made a service call to Citizens Bank in Slaton, Texas. In the course of that service call, Slaton discovered approximately $36,000 in cash in the trash can in the men’s room of the bank. After finding the cash, which belonged to the bank, Cartwright hid it in his tool box and removed it from the bank, with the intent to steal it and keep for his own use. When he was confronted by law enforcement officers later that day at his home, Cartwright surrendered the cash.

The case was investigated by the FBI, the Slaton Police Department, and the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven M. Sucsy of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Lubbock, was in charge of the prosecution.
