IRVING, TEXAS, MAN SENTENCED TO NEARLY 18 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON
FOR SHIPPING AND TRANSPORTING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
DALLAS — James Murphy, Jr., 56, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Jorge A. Solis to 210 months in federal prison, announced U.S. Attorney James T. Jacks of the Northern District of Texas. Murphy, who pleaded guilty in February 2010 to an information charging one count of transporting and shipping child pornography, was also ordered to serve a lifetime of supervised release and register as a sex offender. Judge Solis remanded him into custody following the sentencing hearing.
According to documents filed in the case, Murphy admitted that on December 30, 2007, he used his Google Hello account to connect to another Google Hello user, and sent images of child pornography from his computer in his home in Irving, Texas, to this user in Mississippi.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice, to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. The case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa J. Miller.
