SARAH R. SALDAÑA SWORN IN AS UNITED STATES ATTORNEY
FOR THE NORTHERN DISTRICT OF TEXAS

DALLAS
— Sarah R. Saldaña was sworn in this morning as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas by the Honorable Sidney A. Fitzwater, Chief U.S. District Judge. Upon the recommendation of Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn, President Barack Obama nominated Ms. Saldaña as the District’s new U.S. Attorney, and on Monday, September 26, 2011, the U.S. Senate unanimously approved her nomination.

U.S. Attorney Saldaña succeeds Richard B. Roper, who served as U.S. Attorney from June 2004 to December 2008. Career prosecutor James T. Jacks has served as the court-appointed U.S. Attorney for the District since Mr. Roper left the office for private practice.

“I am honored by the privilege of serving as U.S. Attorney and greatly appreciative of President Obama’s appointment and the consent of the United States Senate, particularly Senators Cornyn and Hutchison,” said U.S. Attorney Saldaña. “I am fully aware of the special trust and confidence they have placed in me and of the grave responsibilities of this office. Along with the fine women and men who serve here, we commit to continue the pursuit of justice on behalf of the citizens of North Texas.”

U.S. Attorney Saldaña will oversee one of the largest U.S. Attorney offices in the country, having prosecutorial responsibility over more than 100 counties in the northern and western areas of Texas, encompassing 95,895 square miles, and a population greater than seven million. The 100 counties are divided into seven divisions with the headquarters office located in Dallas. There are also staffed branch offices in Fort Worth, Lubbock and Amarillo and unstaffed branch offices in San Angelo, Wichita Falls and Abilene. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas employs more than 200 people.

U.S. Attorney Saldaña has served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney since 2004 and most recently served as a Deputy Criminal Chief in charge of the Fraud/Public Corruption Section. Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, she was in private practice at Haynes and Boone, LLP and then at Baker Botts, LLP, in Dallas. She has also worked for several federal agencies including the U.S. Departments of Labor, Housing and Urban Development and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. She earned her undergraduate degree, Summa Cum Laude, from Texas A&M University - Kingsville, formerly Texas A&I University, and a law degree from Southern Methodist University.
