September 11 Victim Compensation

RE: Treatment of Gay Victims of September 11

We write this message because of stories suggesting that gay victims of September 11 should be treated differently than other victims of that tragedy. We can not believe that any serious consideration would be given to a plan that would make these people victims of a home grown bigotry against gay men and women. However, we also believe it could be true -- astonishing but possible.

All victims of September 11 should be treated equally without regard to race, sex, age, financial condition, national origin -- or sexual preference. It would be an American tragedy if any group of people was to be singled out for some kind of unequal treatment by our government.

We write to urge that any proposal to treat gay people in a lesser manner be dismissed out of hand. To even give such a proposal the dignity of debate would be a disgrace.
