It is absolutley imperative that you comensate the gay and lesbian
relatives, domestic partners, spouses, (etc) of victims of 9/11. To do
otherwise is to contravene American law and tradition, and is a
rejection of our basic understanding of human rights. I am not gay, but
we must treat all human persons as dignified and unique and worthy of
our compassion and understanding. We are all children of the One God;
His convenant with us requires equality in all relationships, whether or
not we agree with one another.
The reliance upon state law as a precedent for the compensation, or lack
of compensation, of these American citizens demonstrates the vacuousness
of those making decisions regarding compensation. Now is the time for us
as a country to progress toward the ideals we espouse. It is not a time
to cower behind the facade of antecedent discriminatory practice.
Please make this nation as proud as it ought to be. Tell Kenneth
Feinberg and Attorny General Ashcroft that their proposed policy of
compensation for gays and lesbians is wrong. As the heroes of 9/11 have
demonstrated, doing what is right, for its own sake, is the greatest
individual reward and social benefit to which we can aspire. Emulate
them, and rewward the memory of ALL who have sacrifieced and been
victims of the tragedy.
Thank you in advance.
