Re: Compensation
I just got information detailing the distribution of funds from the
9/11 attacks, I am outraged that most Gay men and women will get absolutely
nothing! Yes, I know that the official policy leaves it up to state law to
determine whether Gay men and women will qualify, but since Gay relationships
are not recognized by 99% of states in this country that leaves us very
little.
I have been a member of the Broadway company of for
five years. In the days following the attacks, I went back to work because it
was my duty. I took a pay cut to keep my job and to prevent the attacks from
destroying a vital and important part of this city, which is the Broadway
community. I cannot tell you how angry I am knowing that if I had lost my
life in the attacks downtown that an illegal alien would receive compensation
and the right to remain in the country, but my partner of seven years would
not. I'm confused why it is appropriate to disregard State and Federal law in
one instance, and not in the other.
Even though this is an old argument I would like nonetheless to
present it to all of you listening in Cyber World. I am Gay. I pay my taxes.
I own my apartment. I give to charity. I gladly make sacrifices for my
country and city. On a daily basis I provide entertainment for the hundreds
of thousands of people that visit New York every week. I am part of why there
is the great city of New York, and apparently I am worth nothing.
