Comment on Final Rule (and Feinberg's comments yesterday)
Dear September 11th Victim Compensation Fund of 2001:
It is completely unacceptable that you will give money to illegal
aliens -- non-citizens who are in this country in violation of Federal
law! -- while witholding money from a group of law-abiding citizens:
the gay/lesbian partners of victims who died at World Trade Center.
Have you considered that these folks have suffered losses exactly
comparable to those who lost husbands and wives? That it is likely
that some of them have children who have lost a father or mother?
Oh, but you're worried about lawsuits. So, you defer to state law.
Sounds so clean and neat....
But, you know that there are no gay/lesbian marriage laws. So, what
you are really doing is depriving gay/lesbian spouses of their rightful
compensation based upon the prejudices of the people who lived around
them.
Would you like the validity of YOUR relationship determined by polling
your neighbors? I bet not. I bet you'd like to be evaluated on your
own merits.
I implore you, and demand of you, that you compensate the partners of
gay/lesbian victims solely upon the particulars of each case, and
WITHOUT regard to local prejudice.
Sincerely,
Individual Comment
