9/11 Fund Benefits

While I applaud the sympathetic approach to illegal immigrants in the paying of benefits for victims of the 11 September attacks, I'm appalled that the same generosity of spirit isn't being extended to the partners of gay and lesbian victims.

Has nothing been learnt about tolerance in the past six months?

If state laws can be circumvented in the case of illegal immigrants, I find no reason why they should be quoted as a reason for avoiding payments to gay and lesbian partners.

As a heterosexual English resident of Australia, I realise it could be argued that this is none of my business, but as a citizen of the world I believe it is important to register my dismay at this turn of events.
