Since September 11th, we've seen the uniting of the United States of America.
It's made me proud to call myself and American... the way we've banded
together across society's lines: skin color, religion, sex... and even
sexual preference. Now those lines are being redrawn, and I'm ashamed.
Every family that suffered losses deserve to be compensated, not just the
families that a select group of people recognize. Yes, laws are laws. If
that is to be the argument for omitting gay families from receiving benefits,
then perhaps ALL laws should be followed to the letter. It disgusts me that
illegal aliens are recognized and receive help while legal Americans suffer
without, simply because some parts of society don't recognize their kind of
family.
We all lost something September 11th. Don't take away what faith we have
left in the world by separating what took a tragedy to bring together... the
AMERICAN people. Gay, straight, black, white, Christian, Jewish-- we all
lost.
