Act immediately to include everyone
U.S. Department of Justice:
I am horrified that my government is specifically excluding people from
victim coverage based on the genders of their relationship -- specifically
women who were involved with women victims and men involved with men victims.
I recognize that unfortunately at this time in our history, many laws don't
recognize the partnerships of two women or two men. However, you have
appropriately made exception to normal government policy regarding people
from other nations living and working illegally in the U.S. because of the
nature and scope of this national tragedy. Similarly, you must make the same
sort of exception as that made for immigration laws. You must include all
victims of this tragedy.
The rhetoric of 'honoring' state statutes is a thin disguise behind which
your policy is not in the least bit hidden. You have purposefully and
unnecessarily excluded American citizens who were harmed by the acts of
terror on September 11. As a citizen I am appalled. Act quickly to correct
this injustice.
I care. I vote.
