Don't let homophobic rhetoric destroy the unity and compassion that arose after September 11. I understand that the fund's position is that survivors of Sept. 11 victims can receive a check even if they are illegal aliens. Yet, domestic partners/gay spouses won't receive a check because their relationships are not recognized by state law.

So let's see if I understand this right. Illegal aliens who are violation of federal law deserve to be compensated, but American citizens whose loved ones were murdered on 9/11 won't get a cent because they are gay/lesbian.

This homophobic policy is disgraceful. Obviously, the policy has nothing to do with a concern for recognizing the law since illegal aliens were so readily and generously included in the fund distribution.

I am outraged that when we most need unity and compassion, thinly veiled bigotry reigns. Surely, you don't intend to send the message that heterosexual people are intrinsically worth more than homosexual people. I urge you to change this policy soon.

Sincerely,
