Post 9/11 Patriotism

To Whom It May Concern:

As an American citizen, it comforts me to think that our congress has set monies aside specifically to care for the families of 9-11 victims. As a queer woman, it angers me to think that had I died my loved ones would not be compensated for my death.

Honestly, all of the post-9-11 patriotism has stirred my faith in "American Values" in democracy and freedom and liberty. Words that for so long seemed empty have regained meaning for me.

To find that the Victim Compensation Fund is discriminating against the life-partners of queer victims... breaks down the wall of hope that I have been building within myself. Only by using the democratic system, by making my voice heard can I keep pessimism and cynicism from flooding back in.

Please, show our nation and the world what American Values are. Please show that Americans are Americans without qualification. Please treat the loved ones of all Americans fairly.
