On the discrimination against lesbian and gay partners of 9/11
victims
I have read about the proposed inequitable treatment and compensation for
gay and lesbian partners of 9/11 victims. I am outraged by this inequity.
Some of the most prominent heroes of 9/11 are acknowledged by their
families, partners and the media to be both gay and lesbian and oustanding
men and women. To disrespect their memories by delegitimizing the rights of
their partners to seek compensation is blatantly unfair. The Victim's
Compensation Fund will not discriminate against heterosexual partners of the
deceased, and even will not deport illegal aliens who are discovered in the
process of getting benefits to the victim's families. Turning a blind eye to
the legitimacy of partners of gay and lesbian victims is cruel and unfair -
and flies in the face of American public sentiment that all victims'
families should be treated equally. I strongly urge the revision of this
policy to equally accomodate lifetime partners of gay and lesbian victims of
9/11.
