Denial of benefits to gay and lesbian partners
I have been following the issue of death benefits to survivors of the 9/11
attacks. In fact, yesterday I had lunch with a friend who knows a
heterosexual woman who will be receiving approximately $10 million dollars
from the Victim Compensation fund due to the death of her husband. She and
her husband were married for no more than two years.
The denial of survivor benefits based on the sexual orientation of the
partners is irrational, arbitrary and discriminatory. I urge you to
re-consider this position and treat all survivors - regardless of their
sexual orientation - fairly, equitably and justly.
