We are terribly upset to find that our government is considering a policy which will not allot funds to partners of gay men and lesbian women as compensation for the loss of their loved ones in the tragedy of September 11. This would be rank discrimination against a group of American citizens, no different then if we were to do the same to Catholics or Protestants or Jews or African-Americans or any other group. We are all Americans, and the pain of losing a loved one is the same whoever we are; a compassionate government should not be an instrument of discrimination. Morality demands that all people, whoever they are should be treated equally. Anything less would only bring disgrace, a charge of hypocrisy and national shame upon us all.

Sincerely,
