September 11 fund
Dear fund managers,
I am writing to express thanks for your hard work in overseeing the victims'
compensation fund for the September 11 tragedy, but also to implore you not
to discriminate against gay Americans in the distribution of these funds.
Although there are no definitive statistics, most experts agree that gays
make up from 5 to 10 percent of our population. With approximately 3000
deaths in the September 11 attacks, that translates to 150-300 gay victims.
Many of these victims left behind partners, who would be spouses if only
American law permitted them to be. You are not obligated to perpetuate this
discrimination; indeed, I would say you are bound by a moral imperative to
treat gay partners just as you would heterosexual spouses. These partners
are just as bereaved, just as heartbroken, and in many cases, just as
financially burdened by the deaths of their loved one. Please reconsider
your policy, and include gay partners in the distribution of your fund.
Thanks,
