Discriminiation is Un-American

Kenneth L. Zwick, Director
Office of Management Programs
Civil Division
U.S.Department of Justice

Mr. Zwick:

As countless Americans continue to recover from the impact of September 11, I join in protesting the fact that gay and lesbian partners of those who died are not automatically going to receive the same benefits as heterosexual spouses. As a gay man, I find it unacceptable that gay-Americans are not entitled to the same treatment under the Victim Compensation Fund as any others who lost their lives that day.

Gay and Lesbian heroes of that day, both known and unknown, leave behind life partners who have the same emotional and financial needs as other Americans. I urge that changes be made to assure equity for all Americans who died that morning. It is said often that life will never be the same. That is so, and let us not perpetuate discrimination that was irrational before September 11th and remains irrational today.

Thank you,
