Attachment 1:
To those at the Civil Divison, U.S. Department of Justice:
I am outraged that gay and lesbian partners of those who died on September 11 are not automatically going to receive the same benefits as heterosexual spouses. I
realize that your department is probably limited in what it can do, though I think it's important that Americans know the injustices that gays and lesbians face even in
the twenty-first century. It disgusts me how hypocritical our country can be. I know that many people probably agree with me on this issue--that it's a basic
principle of equality--but are too afraid to speak out or think they won't accomplish anything. But I wanted to write to say that if September 11th taught us
anything, it's that Americans are Americans, regardless of race, gender, class, religion, sexual orientation, etc. Treat everyone equally. The precedent begins with
our country's national government.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Individual Comment
