This is clearly legislation to benefit business rather than the families. Ths legislation should be amended to delete the offsets. They unfairly penalize those who provided for their families by paying premiums for life insurance protection and for savings under 401(k). There is absolutely no incentive for them to opt for the settlement since they receive nothing. Yet under the legislation they are limited in what they can do if they choose to sue. It seems so terribly unfair. In addition, the non-economic compensation is ridiculously low. $250,000 is nowhere near the value of this type of compensation under normal circumstances. It seems if this legislation was designed to protect the airlines from being bankrupted by numerous lawsuits it is sorely off the mark.
