NYPD benefits
The rules as they stand would leave our family with no reasonable recourse
to the fund, while limiting our ability to recover from a suit. The NYPD
salaries were low, in part, because they included a large benefits package.
Because of the nature of the work this was not something they could
negotiate away. It was very much a part of their salary structure. Because
of this it is unfair for NYPD death benefits and insurance to be seen as
collateral sources.
