victim compensation fund
I'm sorry, I can't see why the US government is setting a precendent like this - why are we paying the families of these tragic victims again? I sent money to the Red Cross, so I understand that the families need help in coping with this horrible situation. But for the government to step in and indemnify life like this seems very dangerous. Who do I call if my husband is killed in an automobile accident? What is the difference between his sudden demise and the death of 2889 people at the WTC? I mean, is the government admitting some kind of wrongdoing by providing funding for these people? And to the people who are crying that it isn't enough to compensate for the loss of Tommy or daddy or whoever - they are right. There will never be enough money minted to compensate for that loss.
