I have the greatest sympathy for the losses suffered by those whose loved ones died on 9/11. However, I believe that the $1.63 million offered by the federal fund, which is TAX FREE, is a generous offer and one which the federal government has no obligation to make. I have heard the complaints about the unfairness of deducting pensions, life insurance policies, etc., but each family will still end up with $1.63 million even with these deductions, albeit not necessairly from the federal government in full or even in part. Let's not also forget the multi-millions of dollars collected by various charities which will be distributed to these families and the fact that President Bush has excused these survivors from paying federal taxes on any income gotten in 2001 and 2002. If any family believes they have been treated unfairly, or that they are being used as scapegoats to save the airlines, they are always free to take their chances with a lawsuit. I hope that reason will prevail, and that the emotionalism of the situation will not be exploited.
