Victim Compensation Fund
Dear Mr. Feinberg:
I listened to your discussion with a representative from one of the
family rights groups on the Nightly Newshour this afternoon. It is with
much sadness that I have to say I disagree with you about whether the
victims families are greedy. I truly believe some of them are,
particularly people such as the representative on today's discussion.
We have never compensated victims of any other disaster in this manner
and I am very concerned about the prescience this may create. We did
not have any special fund for the victims of the Oklahoma City bombing.
We do not have special funds for the victims of natural disasters.
While I realize that no amount of monetary compensation will replace a
lost loved one, I do not believe that the families of these victims
should be made wealthy at the taxpayers' expense. In any other
situation, persons receiving compensation for lost wages would have to
pay income tax on the money received. These persons will have to pay no
income tax on any of the funds. I believe that the proposed
settlements are fair and equitable.
I want to compliment you on your handling of this difficult situation.
I find your proposal to be be fair and equitable.
Very truly yours,
