Maldives: ICITAP Provides International Terrorism Awareness Presentation at Maldives Police Service Training Academy

On December 12, ICITAP’s Counter Terrorism Financing (CTF) Advisor was invited to the Maldives Police Service (MPS) Training Academy in Vaanee to speak to the recruit class about International Terrorism. The Advisor's program included a basic overview of designated extremist's groups operating in the Maldives and awareness opportunities where front-line officers can identify and document actionable intelligence to assist MPS investigating officers. The program was a precursor to future advanced discussions about CT financing, extremist fundraising, and the use of hawalas throughout the Maldives. The presentation was attended by 48 male and 12 female police cadet students. This presentation also provided a platform for Advisor to introduce the "Suspicious Information Report." The ICITAP CTF Advisor recently created the first standardized "Suspicious Information Report," which was adopted by the MPS Strategic Planning Department and is in the process of being translated into the local language, Dhivehi, and incorporated into the nationwide reporting system. The Suspicious Information Report will be used by MPS and as a formalized process for other agencies such as Prisons, Immigration and Customs to submit extremist and criminal activity directly to the MPS. ICITAP’s CTF Advisor is supported by the State Department's Bureau of Counterterrorism and continues to support and work with the Maldives Police Service.
