Indonesia: Criminal Investigations Development Program and OPDAT Facilitate Roundtable TIP Discussion

On July 8, ICITAP-Indonesia collaborated with the Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training (OPDAT) to deliver a webinar roundtable discussion, which focused on Trafficking-in-Persons (TIP) matters in Batam, Riau Islands Province.  Batam is located in close proximity to Singapore and is widely recognized as a hotbed for Migrant Worker Trafficking, Sexual Exploitation Trafficking, and Indentured Servitude onboard foreign-flagged fishing vessels.  Webinar participants from the Indonesian National Police (INP) included a senior-level police official from the TIP Sub-Directorate at Police Headquarters in Jakarta, and police investigators assigned to TIP investigations in the Riau Islands Police District.  Participants from the Indonesia Attorney General's Office (AGO) included senior prosecutors from the Transnational Crimes Directorate in Jakarta, and the lead prosecutor for TIP prosecutions in Batam. ICITAP and OPDAT will coordinate with the INP and AGO to conduct additional webinar roundtable discussions in other areas of Indonesia where Human Trafficking is a high-priority crime problem. Information obtained from these roundtable discussions will be integrated into the training agenda for a planned series of regional TIP training classes for police investigators and prosecutors later this year.
