Legal Aid Interagency Roundtable (LAIR) Meets on Elder Justice

Yesterday afternoon, members of the Legal Aid Interagency Roundtable (LAIR) met at the Department of Justice to discuss the importance of cross-agency collaboration on the priority issue of Elder Justice. 

Experts from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Department of Justice, and Maryland Legal Aid presented best practices on collaboration to enhance outcomes for elder victims.  Select LAIR member entities, including the Legal Services Corporation, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Corporation for National & Community Service, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the Federal Trade Commission, and the National Science Foundation, also presented updates on their work to combat elder abuse and fraud. 

The members focused on the positive results that can be achieved by coordinating efforts among law enforcement, sister-agencies, and state, local, and private partners.  This Administration has prioritized efforts to combat elder abuse and fraud scams that target our nation’s seniors. The Justice Department and HHS will continue to lead the nationwide effort to bring justice to elderly Americans.

Originally established in 2012, and formalized in a 2015 Presidential Memorandum, the purpose of LAIR is to raise federal agencies’ awareness of how civil legal aid can help advance a wide range of federal objectives including employment, family stability, housing, consumer protection, and public safety.
