|Subject:||Response to Corporate Control of Food|
My name is Melody Litwin; I am a student at the City College of New York. I am a cook and a gardener and I am passionate about food. I go far out of my way to buy only locally grown, organic whole foods because, as I see it, that is the only way to eat morally and healthfully.
I am concerned about the consolidation of corporate power in the food and agriculture sector. These corporations have one thing and one thing only in mind when they do business--money. They are harming the health of our nation's people and our nation's land, air and water to thicken their wallets. They have made it so that it is nearly impossible for the average person to eat food that won't harm themselves or the environment. Meanwhile, they are treating our farmers like dirt, either putting them out of business or incorporating them, controlling them and paying them next to nothing. Our current agricultural system is hurting everyone, including our economy, and benefiting only the corporations. We need to completely rethink this system! We need to localize food and make it accessible.
I am so glad to see that the government is showing some concern. Food is such an essential part of life, it's time we paid more attention to it! Thank you for the opportunity to express my concerns.
