I am a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and own a psychiatric private practice in TX. In this state I must pay a physician in order to do this. Why should I have to pay to work under my license? In the past, I've had an MD quit with no notice. Hundreds of mentally ill patients went without care or medications, ending up in hospitals, ERs, and in jail. This costs the government millions of dollars, and I feared I lost my career. Further, it is extortion for a unit with more power to take advantage of that power and hinder another's ability to work within their scope of practice and make them pay money for "allowing" them to work. I have 11 years experience and one of the busiest psychiatric practices in town. Nurse Practitioners will see the uninsured and those with Medicaid and Medicare, 85% do, while physicians do NOT. We fill the gap of physician shortages In south TX, it seems that psychiatrists believe Nurse Practitioners should only work FOR a doctor, making them more money. They are getting used to me here, but most are not pleased with my success. I feel the only way we will see change is for the federal government to step in and make this activity illegal. Nurse Practitioners' patient outcomes are equal to or better than physicians, proven by evidence-based studies. There are no safety issues. This is just the MDs way of controlling us.
