Every year on the last Monday in May, our country pauses to honor those servicemembers who have given the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedom. The Memorial Day holiday—which first began as a commemoration of fallen Union soldiers who gave their lives to overthrow the tyranny of slavery—is an opportunity not only to honor these fallen heroes, but to also express our collective gratitude and appreciation for those servicemembers who work each day to safeguard our country. The Civil Rights Division (“Division”) houses the Servicemembers and Veterans Initiative (“SVI”), which works to protect the rights of servicemembers, veterans, and their families.
