Mexico: ICITAP Advances Mexican Forensic Expertise at AAFS Conference, Enhancing Counter-Narcotics, Transnational Crime, and Anti-Terrorism Capabilities

From February 9–14, ICITAP sponsored eight Mexican forensic experts to participate in the 78th Annual Conference of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) in New Orleans, Louisiana, the largest gathering of the forensic science community focused on learning, collaboration, and professional networking. The conference, themed “Back to Basics: The Fundamentals of Forensic Science,” provided the experts—specializing in chemistry from Campeche, Jalisco, Yucatan, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Nuevo Leon, and Guanajuato – with access to workshops on topics including “Mass Spectrometry Basics” and “Advancing the Adoption of Artificial Intelligence in Forensic Science: Use Cases, Innovation Pathways, and a Procurement Framework.” In addition, the conference allowed participants to exchange best practices, learn about emerging challenges in forensic analysis, and engage with cutting-edge techniques that enhance evidence collection, analysis, and judicial outcomes. ICITAP’s facilitation of this professional development strengthens Mexico’s forensic capabilities, directly improving the quality and reliability of criminal investigations, supporting counter-narcotics, transnational crime, and anti-terrorism operations. By enhancing the ability of Mexican authorities to collect, analyze, and share forensic intelligence effectively, these efforts contribute to U.S. national security priorities by preventing cross-border criminal exploitation, disrupting illicit networks, and protecting American lives and interests. ICITAP’s work in Mexico is implemented with the support and funding of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).
