Mac Heavener III

Mac D. Heavener III was selected as the Criminal Division’s Acting Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General in March 2026. In this role, he helps oversee the strategic and operational management of the Division’s 16 sections and offices. Mac is also a key advisor to the Assistant Attorney General on priority areas as they relate to the Division’s policy, regulatory, and legislative responsibilities.

Mac joined the Criminal Division in December 2025 as the Acting Chief of Staff. Prior to serving as Acting Chief of Staff, Mac served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Tennessee and in the Middle District of Florida, where he also served as the Deputy Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney in that office. During his time as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Mac handled a variety of crimes, including crimes of violence, human trafficking, narcotics, white collar, healthcare fraud, and financial institution fraud.

Before joining the Department, Mac was an attorney at a major law firm in Orlando, Florida and the Chief Assistant State Attorney in Jacksonville’s State Attorney’s Office. Mac graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Citadel and Cum Laude from the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he was an editor on the South Carolina Law Review.
