  • Head of the Civil Rights Division Vanita Gupta spoke at a Justice Department ceremony commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., highlighting how, “he called on millions of Americans – of every race, creed and background – to live up to our identity as a courageous and compassionate nation.”
     
  • A former Mamou, Louisiana, police chief was sentenced to one year in prison for depriving an inmate at the Mamou jail of his federally protected rights by using a taser on the compliant and non-combative inmate.
     
  • Two U.S. Bureau of Prisons (BOP) corrections officers pleaded guilty in connection with the beating of a federal inmate and the subsequent submission of false reports.
     
  • A former Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Officer was indicted on charges of violating the civil rights of A.O., an unnamed victim, by using excessive force during an arrest and charges of obstruction of justice for falsifying a report.
     
  • The Division completed its investigation of special education services at the Leflore County, Mississippi, Juvenile Detention Center and found that the state of Mississippi violated the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) at the detention center school by failing to identify, locate and evaluate children with disabilities; failing to promptly obtain Individualized Education Programs (IEP) from home schools; and depriving students with disabilities of a free appropriate public education (FAPE).
     
  • We reached a settlement agreement with Kent State University (KSU), resolving allegations that the university had maintained a policy of not allowing students with psychological disabilities to keep emotional support animals in university-operated student housing. 
     
  • We entered into a consent decree with Niagara County, New York, resolving allegations that the county discriminated against a corrections officer because of her sex and pregnancy.
