T. 5-25-93 XX Jun 07 1993(stamp) XX XX Monessen, Pennsylvania XX (b)(6) Dear XX This letter responds to your correspondence regarding the application of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to the location of accessible parking spaces relative to an accessible entrance. The ADA authorizes the Department of Justice to provide technical assistance and information to individuals and entities who have questions about the Act, including the Department's regulations and its standards for accessible design. This letter provides informal guidance to assist you in understanding and complying with the ADA accessibility standards. However, this technical assistance should not be viewed as legal advice or a legal opinion about your rights or responsibilities under the ADA and it is not binding on the Department of Justice. The Department's accessibility standards at section 4.6.2 (page 35631 of the enclosed Federal Register document) do require that accessible parking spaces serving a particular building must be located on the shortest accessible route of travel to an accessible entrance. In some instances, local fire engine access requirements prohibit parking immediately adjacent to a building; if such is the case, a marked crossing may be used as part of the accessible route to the entrance. Please feel free to contact the Public Access Section when you have questions or need information. The Department maintains a telephone information line to provide technical assistance regarding the rights and obligations of individuals, businesses, agencies, and others covered or protected by the ADA.
