April 12, 1994 Mr. John Wodatch U.S. Department of Justice Chief of Public Access Section Civil Rights Division PO Box 66738 Washington, D.C. 20035 Dear Mr. Wodatch: I am enclosing a letter from one of my constituents. Any assistance you may be able to provide Dr. Snyder would be greatly appreciated. When Congress approved the Americans With Disabilities Act it was intended to help those with disabilities. Despite the good intentions of this bill, it is important that it is reasonably implemented. As we provide disabled individuals with accessible accommodations, we must make certain that the requirements placed on businesses are consistent with the intent of the legislation and do not place an unfair burden on the owners of these businesses. In this particular case, mandating wheelchair accessible bathrooms for each of the examining rooms seems to exceed the requirements that Congress had intended. I would appreciate hearing from you in this regard. If you have any questions, please contact John Campbell in our Corning district office. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Amo Houghton Member of Congress 01-03133
