IT Office Equipment

Objective: Ensure that microcomputers, printers, fax machines, copiers, scanners, and other general office equipment are configured to allow easy access to individuals with a variety of disabilities.

Activities: The following activities are planned to meet the above IT Office Equipment objective:

--Draft requirements language for acquisition documents as referenced under procurement activities.
--Identify exemplary examples of adaptive technology currently within DOL as a ready and available resource.
--During FY 2000, encourage DOL agencies to purchase or retrofit at least one device of each type of share office equipment.
--Request agencies develop a plan to retrofit or replace all existing office equipment with new accessible equipment within the next 5 years.
The Departmental Human Resources Center (HRC) has established a Central Office for Assistive Services and Technology (COAST). The office is designed to assist and coordinate services and technical support in the provision of access and reasonable accommodations to DOL clients and employees with disabilities. COAST provides ongoing assistance to DOL employees through a wide variety of services, some of which are:
--Maintaining a limited "Loaner Assistive Tech" repository.
--Maintaining a Disability (DA) resource information system on disabling conditions, DA organizations, and vendors of assistive devices.
--Providing in-service training as requested on DA issues, operation of assistive devices, etiquette, and usage of an interpreter in a conversation.
--Conducting work site assessments for determination/identification of reasonable accommodations and the how, what, why, set-ups, coordination of purchasing, installation, and related training if any.
--Coordinating and providing sign language interpreter services
