United States Department of Justice Elder Justice Initiative

Dear Colleagues:

National Elder Justice Law Enforcement Summit

The Department of Justice’s Elder Justice Initiative, in cooperation with the COPS Office and the Office for Victims of Crime, hosted the first National Elder Justice Law Enforcement Summit in Washington, D.C., February 7 – 8, 2024.

The law enforcement community has made tremendous strides in detecting and responding to elder abuse over the past decade and the Summit was designed to accelerate that momentum.

Over 100 law enforcement representatives, at least one from each state, were in attendance. Participants included representatives from the state Chiefs of Police Associations, POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) boards and organizations, as well as sheriffs, state and local investigators, and members of Medicaid Fraud Control Units. In addition, the Summit was attended by representatives from some of the Department’s elder justice grant programs (including its Enhanced Elder Abuse Multidisciplinary Teams and State and Tribal Elder Justice Coalition programs), national law enforcement organizations, the FBI, and federal agency partners.

Guests gathered in person and online to share best practices, hear from prominent subject matter experts, forge new relationships, and spark new ideas. While the Summit was an important step forward, there is still much work to be done and we look forward to further collaborations with state and local law enforcement to combat elder abuse, neglect, financial exploitation, and fraud.
