The mission of the U.S. Attorney's Office, Eastern District of Louisiana is to protect and serve all residents of Southeast Louisiana through enforcement of the laws of the United States. The lawyers and staff in our office work hard every day to defend our national security, improve the safety and quality of life in all of our communities through enforcement of federal laws, and protect the public funds of the United States.
Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

An appointment as an Assistant United States Attorney with the U.S. Attorney's Office offers unique and challenging experiences for highly motivated attorneys seeking to represent the interests of the United States in a wide variety of federal litigation. This position is in the Asset Forfeiture Unit of the Criminal Division. The applicant selected for this position will work with Criminal Division Assistant United States Attorneys on forfeiture-related issues in criminal prosecutions and have overall responsibility for all issues involving asset forfeiture, including investigations, seizures, restraint of assets, transferring title to the United States, litigating third party claims, and final disposition of assets. The Asset Forfeiture Unit also handles all civil forfeiture matters in the District. Day-to-day responsibilities may include working with other Assistant United States Attorneys and legal support staff in the Criminal Division, law enforcement agents, research and writing, negotiating case resolutions, representation of the United States in federal court, and other litigation related duties. The Assistant United States Attorney also will work with Financial Litigation Unit to provide expert advice on restitution and enforcement remedies for cases involving victims.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
Required Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 3 years post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.
United States citizenship is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred applicants will have experience litigating criminal cases in the federal sector or in the federal courts. Since the applicant will handle both criminal and civil forfeiture cases, experience in federal civil practice, procedure, and litigation is highly desirable. Experience with, or knowledge of, laws governing federal criminal or civil asset forfeiture, money laundering, and financial litigation is desirable. Financial analysis or investigatory experience is also preferred. Applicants should demonstrate well developed computer skills, have strong character and interpersonal skills, and demonstrate the capacity to function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment. Preferred applicants will demonstrate superior oral and written communications skills; excellent case management skills; and the ability to work as part of a team.

Louisiana Bar Membership:
If not a member of the Louisiana Bar, it is encouraged that Assistant United States Attorneys of the Eastern District of Louisiana become a member of the Louisiana Bar within a reasonable period of time.

It is the policy of the Department to achieve a drug-free workplace and persons selected for employment will be required to pass a drug test which screens for illegal drug use prior to final appointment. There is no formal rating system for applying veterans' preference to attorney appointments in the excepted service; however, the Department of Justice considers veterans' preference eligibility as a positive factor in attorney hiring. Applicants eligible for veterans' preference must include that information in their cover letter or resume and attach supporting documentation (e.g., the DD 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty and other supporting documentation) to their submissions. Although the "point" system is not used, per se, applicants eligible to claim 10-point preference must submit Standard Form (SF) 15, Application for 10-Point Veteran Preference, and submit the supporting documentation required for the specific type of preference claimed (visit the OPM website, www.opm.gov/forms/pdf_fill/SF15.pdf for a copy of SF 15, which lists the types of 10-point preferences and the required supporting document(s).
