The United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas, with approximately 190 Assistant United States Attorneys, is among the largest in the country. The office prosecutes federal crimes and represents the interests of the United States in civil cases. The Southern District of Texas stretches from the Houston area southwest to the Mexican border. The United States Attorney's Office operates staffed offices in Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Houston, Laredo, McAllen, and Victoria.
Type of Position: This is a TERM position not to exceed 09/30/16. Due to the nature of the appointment, the applicant will be eligible for participation in all Federal benefit programs provided he/she has at least a 13-month period of employment remaining from the date of entry on duty at time of the initial appointment. Employment less than 13 months will affect the eligibility for some benefits. An applicant who transfers from another federal position with entitlement to benefits (health, life, retirement) will be able to continue his/her benefits without interruption provided there is no break in service.
Responsibilities and Opportunity Offered: The United States Attorneys Office for the Southern District of Texas seeks an experienced attorney to serve in its Asset Forfeiture Group in the Criminal Division of its McAllen or Brownsville office. The successful candidate will serve as a Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) Review attorney and will manage and coordinate a multi-agency SAR Review Team to make proactive use of SAR data. This position will serve as the anchor of an existing SAR Review program and will enhance our office's ability to investigate and prosecute money laundering, illegal money transmitters, illegal structuring of currency deposits, tax offenses, and all other criminal activity that is captured in SAR data. The SAR Review AUSA would assist in managing all aspects of civil and criminal forfeiture prosecutions developed from the SAR Review Team. This is a TERM appointment; the appointment will expire on September 30, 2016.
NOTE: RECRUITMENT IS FOR ONE VACANCY. THE POSITION WILL BE LOCATED IN EITHER BROWNSVILLE, TX OR MCALLEN, TX. THE DUTY STATION FOR THIS POSITION WILL BE DETERMINED AT TIME OF SELECTION.
Required qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least three years of full-time post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Hiring preferences include at least three years of federal court experience and an accounting degree or equivalent accounting experience. Other desirable experience includes working in or for a financial institution or having a strong working knowledge of the operations within financial institutions. Ideal candidates will have first-chair federal trial experience, strong academics, outstanding organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills, superior legal writing and research ability, and a demonstrated commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, and public service. Spanish language skills and familiarity with South Texas are highly desirable, but not required. Qualifications must be met by the closing date of the announcement.
